“We’re done”: Swen Vincke’s Reason Why Larian Studios Won’t Be Making Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC or a Sequel Will Surprise You
In a year stacked with major game releases, Larian took the industry by storm with Baldur’s Gate 3, which received numerous accolades, including the Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2023. There was obvious love and care put into the title, as it was clear that the developer wanted to create a gaming experience unlike any other, putting an innovative spin on the Dungeons and Dragons adventure and shaping it for modern audiences.
With the kind of success that the game achieved, one would expect CEO Swen Vincke to try and build on the hype with some form of DLC or sequel, as most other developers do, but surprisingly, that’s not the case.
Larian CEO Isn’t Interested in Making More Baldur’s Gate 3
Capitalizing off the triumph that Baldur’s Gate 3 proved to be would’ve only been natural for Larian, but the CEO has made it clear that the developer isn’t interested in repeating its creative abilities. “I want to make games with a beginning, middle, and end,” stated Vincke during an interview, which took place sometime after his revelation about another Baldur’s Gate installment at the GDC earlier this year.

The Larian founder continued that he finds “nothing wrong with the games-as-a-service model,” admitting that there are some live-service games that are doing it right, a major example of which is how Arrowhead is handling Helldivers 2.
In a bittersweet confirmation, Vincke said that the studio is “not making another BG, or DLC, because we’re done,” as he doesn’t want to do the same thing over and over again. The Larian CEO is quite content with how the third Baldur’s Gate ended, which allows him to finally “move on to the next one.”
So What Can Gamers Expect From Swen Vincke Next?
The Larian Studios CEO stated that the team wants “to move on to something new,” but it still has not been decided exactly what it is going to be.
Although the developer’s Dungeons and Dragons journey may have ended with Baldur’s Gate 3, Swen Vincke says that his next project “contains a number of things that” the studio has not implemented in its video games before.
Vincke is “really curious to see if they’re going to work out,” which are probably the same sentiments shared by the huge gaming community Larian has brought together.
With Baldur’s Gate 3, the studio put a lot of faith in its own creative process, and in the efforts of developing what the team thought was “a good game,” it created an unforgettable gaming experience.
