“This looks awesome”: NetherRealm Had a Fully Working Fan-Fave Mechanic in Mortal Kombat 1 That It Cut for Some Reason
Fans are questioning why the developer chose to remove the feature.
Although there may be a lot to love about Mortal Kombat 1, it has not really managed to create a stable fanbase for itself since its launch last year due to numerous reasons. When it comes to the narrative of the Mortal Kombat franchise, the latest effort by NetherRealm Studios actually does a serviceable job as a reboot, but many of its other aspects have been met with plenty of criticism.
However, as a video showcasing a fan-fave mechanic that was supposedly cut from Mortal Kombat 1 has resurfaced on the internet, the community is wondering whether it was the right decision from the developer to not include it in the final game.
Mortal Kombat 1 Could Have Been a Better Experience if It Kept Its Tag-Team Option
While NetherRealm Studios included a minor sort of tag-team mechanic in Mortal Kombat 1 in the form of Kameo fighters, these assistive characters do not serve a significant purpose, as they do not even last for too long.

As a quick history lesson for the franchise, Mortal Kombat 9 actually used to have a full-fledged tag-team option for players to use in intense fights. That somewhat continued in Mortal Kombat 11, which moved the mechanic into a completely new mode, as it could not be used in any situation other than the Tag Team Ladders.
Unfortunately, the scale of the tag-team mechanic became even smaller in Mortal Kombat 1, but as evident from the video below, NetherRealm Studios seemed to have been initially planning on bringing it to its latest game, until the developer chose to remove it.
Although the footage above incorporates a mod into Mortal Kombat 1 to ensure that the tag-team option always stays on, the rest of it is what NetherRealm already implemented, raising concerns among the fanbase about its unnecessary removal.
The Tag-Team Mechanic Could Have Added More Layers Into the Fighting Game
Naturally, the fanbase’s reaction to the removal of the tag-team option from Mortal Kombat 1 has been anything but positive, as it was a mechanic that NetherRealm Studios perfectly implemented in an installment that was launched more than a decade ago.

Players are not really on board with the developer’s decision to have Kameo fighters be the replacement for a potential tag-team mode that could have added many more layers to the game’s combat.
As Mortal Kombat 1 is gearing up for its Year 2 of additional content, some fans are losing hope about the tag-team feature ever coming to the game, especially because the footage actually looks quite promising.
In an era where Mortal Kombat desperately needs a win, with players deciding to quit the franchise due to the latest installment’s shortcomings, concept videos like these are only making it worse for the game because the community is thinking about everything that the title could have been.
Instead, NetherRealm Studios seems to be putting more focus on its Kombat Packs and guest characters rather than the loyal player base that made Mortal Kombat the household name it is today.
