PlayStation is one of the biggest gaming platforms in the world with millions of games on it. Every year hundreds of games are released on the PlayStation, giving this platform a substantial boost. Apart from that, Sony has a portable version of the console named, PSP or PlayStation Portable that players can carry with them like a mobile phone and play games on it. This one was released in 2004 and almost two decades later, Sony launched PlayStation Portal, another handheld device associated with PS5. Players can use it to stream from a PlayStation 5 (specifically, games installed on PS5) using Remote Play.

While everything had been going well, a sudden hacking news created a stir among the PlayStation Portal players that the device had been hacked to run PSP games. Hacking is generally an unethical thing, but this one makes PlayStation Portal players happy.

PlayStation Portal Got Hacked and Reportedly, It Can Run PSP Games

PlayStation Portal is hacked by a group of Google Engineers to run emulated games. On February 19, a Google Engineer, Andy Nguyen shared an image on his X profile (formerly Twitter) and declared that he, along with two more Google Engineers had hacked the PlayStation Portal. He captioned it, “After more than a month of hard work, PPSSPP is running natively on PlayStation Portal. Yes, we hacked it.”

The post clearly states that they have hacked the device and enabled it to install the PPSSPP emulator, so players can now run PSP games locally, without online connection and streaming. PlayStation Portal is essentially a streaming device that can only stream their PS5 games via Remote Play, so players can enjoy the games while staying away from the console.

The handheld device has no save option or any install option to get new games. It can only stream already-installed games. However, this hack has revolutionized the process and made the PlayStation Portal run the PSP games offline.

However, Andy Nguyen revealed that the hack was made on the software level, so the hardware part has not been impacted by anything. Moreover, they don’t have any plans to release the hack in the near future. The image on the tweet shows a scene from the PSP version of GTA III. There’s no other information on how to run PSP games on the device. Anyway, he announced that the video of the process is in progress, and he may release some videos to demonstrate the process.

It’s been a few months since PlayStation Portal was launched. This device is cheaper than most other portable gaming devices as it costs only $199.99. Until the hack is revealed or the Google Engineer team shows the process to run games offline, we can suggest some games that players can try streaming on PlayStation Portal. Below is the list:

  • Resident Evil 4 Remake
  • Elden Ring
  • Alan Wake 2
  • Dead Space
  • Ghost Of Tsushima: Director’s Cut
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

These iconic games are all available on PS5 and thus they can be streamed on PlayStation Portal if you have purchased and installed them on your console.
