Hardly any action-adventure franchise gets popularity like Santa Monica Studio’s God of War. The journey that started with Kratos’ fight with mythological gods in 2005, earned massive success throughout the next eighteen years and consists of numerous installments. Players are still waiting for the new God of War installment.

After God of War Ragnarok’s record-breaking success in 2022, the developers have given a break to explore some new storylines. In the meantime, if one wants to look back to some of the iconic moments of the franchise, there are numerous that come to mind. But we have picked a few iconic moments that probably God of War fans never forget.

10. Kratos vs. Hydra (God of War)

god of war

After the God of War series started, Hydra was the first boss Kratos encountered. From the beginning, the enemy was mentioned, but no one probably expected it to be a giant like that. Given the enormous size and deadly attacks of this beast, it seems to be an impossible fight to win but then comes the famous philosophy of Kratos- if it bleeds, it can die. This is the philosophy that drives Kratos.

9. “Zeus! Your son has returned!…” (God of War II)

god of war

This is one of the iconic scenes and moments in the entire God of War series where God got scared seeing Kratos scaling Mount Olympus with their most hated rivals. It’s the moment Kratos said, “Zeus! Your Son Has Returned. I Bring The Destruction Of Olympus!” This also made the gods realize the mess they had created by denying Kratos relief from the nightmares.

8. Death of Ares (God of War)

Again, let’s return to God of War and if you have played it, you will definitely remember the final fight between Kratos and Ares that starts with his iconic dialogue, “I am not the same man you found that day. The monster you’ve created has returned to kill you.” This fight was a head-to-head fight, but finally, Ares died to end the game. In the end, Kratos lifts a sword and passes it through Ares’ heart.

7. Kratos vs. Thanatos (Ghosts of Sparta)

god of war

This may not be one of the epic boss fights as Kratos has faced multiple more challenging enemies in the later installments, the fight against Thanatos was the first fight where Kratos involved one of this family member. Deimos’ presence was a long-mentioned thing in the game, but the brother of Kratos first appeared in Ghosts of Sparta. After the reunion, they initially clashed but later, both brothers teamed up to take down Thanatos to make it a special moment.

6. Burned the Prisoner (God of War)

god of war

This sequence was epic in God of War where players vividly realized the brutal side of Kratos. In Pandora’s Temple Kratos found malnourished prisoners. He had to sacrifice one to progress. Without any hesitation, he went to a prisoner and said that the prisoner must die because Gods require sacrifice. Without listening to his screams for life, Kratos burned him alive. Players who have played God of War must remember this scene.

5. Kratos vs. Poseidon (God of War III)

god of war

This intense fight opens God of War III. Except for Zeus, Kratos never gave importance to any god or their powers. At the beginning of the game, he manages to extract Poseidon, the god of the sea, and take him down. He tears away Poseidon by performing dizzying attacks against Poseidon’s many aquatic limbs. Later he even cut out the eyes of Poseidon. Maybe this scene won’t be one of the iconic ones, if not players experience this brutality from Poseidon’s point of view.

4. Meeting Angrboda (God of War Ragnarok)

god of war

God of War Ragnarok doesn’t have many epic encounters, but still, if you have played the game, you will find Atreus’ meeting with Angrboda worth remembering. In search of his identity and to get answers to his questions, the young god reached Jotunheim. He faces the last remaining giant in the realm – Angrboda, but she instantly reaches out for friendship. Though Atreus doesn’t like her much, he has no other option because Angrbods has already made it clear that she knows several answers that the young god is looking for. She gives a positive vibe in the decaying world of Ragnarok.

3. Revelation Related to Loki (God of War 2018)

god of war

No other God of War has ever given so many twists and epic moments as God of War 2018. If players have completed the journey, they must remember the shocking revelation that the developers made towards the end of the game. It revealed that Atreus is actually Loki and Faye is a giant. This instantly blew the minds of the players and showed the range where twists can reach in God of War.

2. Kratos vs. Baldur (God of War 2018)

god of war

God of War 2018 fans can never forget the intense and thrilling closing fight between Kratos and Baldur. Baldur was one of the most powerful opponents Kratos had ever faced. Atreus’ shooting of arrows in the air and Kratos’ slamming him on the ground gave this fight a different touch with a dragon and re-animated corpse of a giant inclining the excitement.

1. Kratos and Atreus Parting Ways (God of War Ragnarok)

Towards the end of God of War Ragnarok, when everyone returned to Midgard, Atreus found Kratos waiting for him. Angrboda led them to another Keeper’s Shrine that Freya had hidden from the rest of the giants. At a point, Atreus said, he wanted to find the remaining giants and he believed that’s his destiny. Though Kratos had protected his son all the way, he agreed his son to meet his destiny. After they bid goodbye, Kratos got a prophecy that was made just for him.

These are only a few iconic moments we have captured in this article. This series has uncountable moments that made permanent places in the hearts of players.
