SUMMARY
  • The Call of Duty: Black Ops series is one of the most popular sub-series in the franchise, with several massively hit games.
  • While the series has six major installments, Black Ops 4 met the worst fate.
  • On the other hand, Black Ops 2 was one of the best Call of Duty games ever released.

The Call of Duty franchise has been running for more than two decades, and over these years, Activision has introduced multiple series, including Modern Warfare, Black Ops, etc.

At this point, players are curiously waiting for the seventh main installment in the Black Ops series, which is scheduled to be released on October 25. Therefore, this is the best time to dive into the series and check out the best and worst games that Activision has presented players with. In the list below, we have arranged the Black Ops games from worst to best.

6. Black Ops 4

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was one of the biggest failures that the series ever faced.

When trying to make a list from worst to best, it didn’t take long to determine the first entry: Black Ops 4. This is the fourth main installment in the series. Unfortunately, this one has a below-average user score on Metacritic. It took a unique approach, but that was a complete failure as players rejected it. The gameplay was an odd mixture of classic and futuristic elements that didn’t work out well.

Though the game has fun elements, especially in the multiplayer section, releasing it without a campaign did the most damage.

5. Black Ops Cold War

Cold War was one of those games that received mixed reactions from Call of Duty fans.

The next entry is Black Ops Cold War. With this installment, the series returned to the basics without roaming around here and there.

There are multiple things that players can appreciate about this game, and the campaign is definitely among them. The story of the game is entirely set in the Cold War era, and the missions are all designed to suit the environment of the game.

The game is actually pretty good, but it’s just that it lacks some vital aspects, like the campaign is too short, and the zombie mode is also not satisfactory.

4. Black Ops

Black Ops is the introductory game that basically initiates this iconic Call of Duty series.

This is the first proper entry in the series. Basically, this is the foundation on which the series was later built. Well, this 2010 entry was almost perfectly designed from every side. The campaign was flawless, and the story was mostly focused on the characters rather than on world-ending stakes.

Despite this entry being highly appreciated as it introduces iconic characters like Frank Woods and Alex Mason, this game lacks the polish and precision that made it rank a little lower than the latter entries.

3. World at War

This is the oldest game in the series and without the iconic title.

Well, World at War doesn’t feature the iconic title of the series, but still, it is technically the beginning of the series. This 2008 title is set during World War II, and it took a different turn from the Modern Warfare series. However, considering that it is one of the oldest games in the franchise, the campaign is worth praising.

The game lets you switch between America and the Soviets in the backdrop of war. More importantly, in this game, players will feel the intensity and the gloomy side of the war. Therefore, this is worth trying if you haven’t ever played it before.

2. Black Ops 3

The advanced combat mechanics proved to be the best in this game.

Now that we are going toward the conclusion, the selection should be carefully done, and Black Ops 3 can’t be beaten at this point. This game is set in a futuristic world with an advanced approach to war mechanics. Along with that, this game features a co-op method to finish the campaign, where players can team up with three more players.

This game basically marks a new beginning that the previous games of the series never had. Therefore, this is one of the best games that you must give a try to understand the series deeply.

1. Black Ops 2

The 2012 title is the best game ever released in the series and one of the greatest in the franchise.

This title was released in 2012, and it has almost all the qualities that can make a game the best in a franchise. This is not only the best game in the series, but one of the greatest Call of Duty games ever released. This is the first game in the series to have multiple branches in the story, and as you decide your progress path through choices, you will proceed to different endings.

The game has all the major characters from the previous installment, and the storyline goes back and forth in time as you keep playing the game. Additionally, its gunplay is unmatched.

These are the best and worst games in the series that players should give a try to understand the upcoming game and its storyline in more detail.
