1 Pokemon Player Enjoyed the Elite Raid More than Most with Unbelievable Luck
For one lucky Pokemon Go player, the recent Elite Raid was the stuff of dreams. His Reddit post may be a wake-up call for Niantic though.
Pokemon Go’s Elite Raids have caught the attention of its growing player base due to their limited availability and the chance to obtain very rare Pokemon as part of its gameplay loop.
The recent Mega Rayquaza Elite Raid allowed its players a chance to get their hands on the Legendary Dragon, with one player in the UK managing to take things a step further!
For Those Who Just Have to Catch ‘Em All
Released back in 2016, Pokemon Go is a unique take on capturing and training Pokemon. Developed by Niantic alongside Nintendo and The Pokemon Company, it uses augmented reality in tandem with its users’ GPS on mobile devices to deliver a Pokemon game that’s set in the real world.

Elite Raids are limited-time events in which players have a chance to take on special variants of rare Pokemon for generous rewards and a chance to capture the Pokemon serving as the Raid Boss for them to use in their game. What’s more, a special that activates around Gyms that host Elite Raids causes more rare Pokemon to spawn around it for a limited time!
The Best Reward a Player Could Hope For
For Reddit user Jake_Grumpy, the Mega Rayquaza Elite Raid went better than he could have ever hoped. He promptly took to the platform to share his elation – and surprise at what he manged to secure. His post is below:
In addition to getting the Legendary Rayquaza – a reward in its own right considering the Pokemon’s powerful move set and high health pool – he was able to score a Shundo variant of it!
With Shundo variants being as rare as they are, it’s safe to say that this Elite Raid went better than he ever could have anticipated which is exactly what several other Pokemon Go on his post seemed to think.
Others weren’t as impressed, arguing that getting the Shundo variant on a Rayquaza was not as impressive as finding it for other Legendary Pokemon.
Jake_Grumpy’s post also brought up a few criticisms of how the Elite Raid was announced, with a few disgruntled players giving voice to their opinions.
In particular, the requirement that Elite Raids must be played in person continues to be a pain point for many Pokemon Go players who may not have the time to visit specific locations in order to battle it out against Raid Bosses.
It’s evident that Niantic has some thinking to do about how it handles Elite Raids in the future, making these events accessible to more of its player base to improve their Pokemon Go experience, even as its May 2024 Community Day update was well received.
While those changes unfold over time, it’s certain that Jake_Grumpy will enjoy his new Rayquaza for a long time to come.
