SUMMARY
  • Ed Boon revealed that NetherRealm decided on its upcoming project long ago, even before the previous one was finished.
  • However, Mortal Kombat 1 fans shouldn't get worried about anything, as this game will remain the priority of the studio for upcoming years.
  • Anyway, this statement hasn't created any excitement among fans, as their previous experience isn't at all great.

NetherRealm Studios is sure of what it is doing and is following what it has decided. Since Mortal Kombat 1’s release in 2023, the studio hasn’t revealed anything about its upcoming projects. Up to this point, NetherRealm Studios released no game in 2024, which naturally makes gamers curious about the future plans of the developer.

While there’s a dense cloud of rumors and speculations all around NetherRealm Studios and its upcoming projects, nothing was revealed until Ed Boon recently shared some updates with fans to tell them about the studio’s plans. However, players are not at all convinced by the statement.

Mortal Kombat 1 Is at the Center of NetherRealm Studios’ Future Plans

Mortal Kombat 1 is at the center of NetherRealm’s focus and will be for the next few years.

Mortal Kombat 1 is the twelfth mainline installment in the series and the second reboot. Since the game was released, players have made a lot of complaints about the gameplay, especially the combat system and the Kameos. Anyway, the situation has not much improved in this one year.

Therefore, frustrated fans have been expecting something better from the studio, but it seems like it decided its upcoming plans three years ago.

Amidst the speculations about whether Injustice 3 is under development or not, NetherRealm Studios’ boss Ed Boon arrived to answer the most asked question.

In an interview, he revealed that generally, they plan the next project before the previous one ends because there are so many preparations to make before starting new work. About the upcoming project, he expressed,

We’ve known what our next game was going to be three years ago and we’ve been working on it in some capacity ever since.”

No further detail was shared about the upcoming project, but after that, on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, he assured Mortal Kombat fans by saying that the studio is totally committed to the game and Mortal Kombat 1 will be on the priority list for “a long time to come.”

However, even though Ed Boon says they are ready to support the game, history says something different.

Mortal Kombat 1 Players Aren’t Convinced With Ed Boon’s Statement Considering Previous Experiences

Despite the developer’s dedication to the game, the in-game experience of players isn’t improving.

The statement of Boon came with the release of Khaos Reigns for Mortal Kombat 1. Despite this expansion bringing new story mode chapters and Kombat Pack 2, players aren’t ready to trust Boon completely.

While grinding Mortal Kombat 1, they have faced a lot of issues that must be fixed. Therefore, the studio stating the game as a priority contradicts their experience.

There are a lot of things that require improvement or additions to make the gameplay better. One player listed a few features for NetherRealm to consider and add to the game.

While Kameos play an important role in the fighting, a lot of players don’t like having them. So, they want NetherRealm to add an option to fight without Kameos.

Despite the studio having set it as a priority, players still haven’t received real 2v2 combat mode in Mortal Kombat 1.

These instances show that maybe Mortal Kombat 1 is the focal point of the studio, but still, it requires a lot of work to improve the gameplay.

Anyway, there’s nothing specifically stated about the next project that the studio is working on, including its approximate arrival time.
