Mortal Kombat 1 isn’t a perfect fighting game, but it’s hard to deny its ability to bring franchises together and make their respective characters mold themselves for the world NetherRealm has created. Aside from featuring some old Mortal Kombat fighters, the first batch of the Kombat Pack has revolved around unhinged superheroes who’ve recently gained popularity in their respective mediums.

But that could be changing as soon as Takeda, the final character in the current Kombat Pack, appears and the developer moves on to another genre for the next batch.

Mortal Kombat 1 Is Seemingly Set to Feature a True Horror Icon

Mortal Kombat 1 could continue the series' tradition by bringing in yet another horror icon to the roster.

Datamining has become a common occurrence in the modern gaming scene, with dedicated fans trying to discover any details about content before the developers even get a chance to officially reveal it. Mortal Kombat 1 went through the same thing, as a data miner shared some audio content that may be featured later in the game, with Mileena announcing several fighter names the way it sounds when players select them from the character select screen.

At just over the 5-minute mark, Mileena can be heard saying the name “Ghostface,” sparking speculation that the slasher icon could be heading to the game’s roster very soon.

If the antagonist from the popular Scream franchise does indeed find his way to the NetherRealm Studios’ title, he would be joining the likes of Leatherface, Freddy Krueger, and Jason Voorhees. All four of these killers have managed to get on top of the horror genre, achieving the status of iconic in the process. As Mortal Kombat 1 has visited the scary realms in the past with these DLC characters, there is not much doubt that Ghostface would fit quite well in the game’s universe.

Ghostface May Not Be the Only Scary Killer Joining the Game

Jason, Freddy, and Leatherface would probably be proud of Ghostface for joining them in the Mortal Kombat franchise.

A few days after Mortal Kombat 1 was launched in 2023, director Ed Boon posted an image on his official X account, showing eight iconic characters who have shaped the realm of horror media throughout the years.

Out of those eight icons, Boon ticked off three who have already made appearances in the Mortal Kombat series in the past as DLC characters: Leatherface, Freddy, and Jason.

But the standout aspect of the post was that the remaining five had question marks put over them, with Ghostface also included in the potential tease.

If Boon was actually teasing the future of his massive fighting franchise, it could mean that killers like Chucky, Michael Myers, Jigsaw, and Pinhead could be appearing in the series later on as well.

For now, it is exciting to think about how Ghostface, whose primary weapon is a knife, will fare against someone like Homelander, who comes with eye lasers that destroy everything in their way.
