Missions Made Easy: Purge Hatcheries in Helldivers 2 and Take Down the Big Boys for Democracy!
Purging Terminid Hatcheries is important to Democracy's war effort. That doesn't mean your Helldivers squad shouldn't have a little fun with these annoying bugs while they're on the job!
Arrowhead Studios’ Helldivers 2 is among the most popular games of 2024 for a reason. Its action-packed gameplay works well with its premise. With a number of mission types spread out across various military objectives, requiring your squad to take on either the Automatons or Terminids, the game can quickly get addictive to the point where you find yourself sinking hours into it with your buddies.
Earning rewards and progressing in Helldivers 2 is done through completing military objectives handed down to your squad by those in charge of Super Earth. However, completing those objectives may not be as straightforward as they are made to sound, requiring you to adapt your tactics on the fly while facing off against several threats in the field.
Infestations That Cannot Be Ignored
The Terminids are alien bug-like creatures that are a source of constant annoyance to those that manage Super Earth. Consequently, it falls to the Helldivers to remove them out of the equation at key points of interest, often having to wipe them out entirely or destroy their eggs in order to prevent them from taking over the area again.

The latter objective is a whole mission type on its own called Purge Hatcheries, a series of exterminations in which you find Terminid eggs at marked sites across the map, eliminate any bugs that inhabit them and them wipe out their Eggs in order to complete the objective. The number of sites increases at higher difficulties, as do the number and variety of Terminids at each site. However, the time you are given for the mission stays the same at forty minutes across all difficulties.
How to Complete Purge Hatcheries
While this is a fairly straightforward mission type in Helldivers 2, the mission’s long duration is a great advantage if you’re looking to have some fun with everybody’s least favorite bugs. As with all Terminid missions, bring your fastest firing weapons, a source of fire damage and as many explosives as you can carry. This can enable you to easily deal with Terminid Swarms that show up to defend their precious Eggs.
The sites you need to exterminate are marked in orange on your map, making it easy to locate them. The Eggs themselves could be peppered along the ground and even on the walls at these sites and you can be sure that the Terminids will protect them at all costs. Prepare for an onslaught of bugs who try to take advantage of their superior numbers to overwhelm you.
A good strategy here would be to combine weapons like the Railgun with Stratagems like the SH-32 Shield Generator Pack, allowing yut to tear through the Terminid ranks while hiding behind the safety of your shields. The FLAM-40 Flamethrower is another obvious choice for these missions as the Terminids are especially weak to fire damage. With this approach, you can enter each site all guns blazing and simply wipe out their defenses before finding glowing orange Eggs for you to shoot down.
As far as armor for this mission is concerned, the CE-35 Trench Engineer Armor lets you deal additional damage when you fire while crouched – a great synergy with the SH-32’s shield as you can avoid taking damage from the Terminid’s claws while your weapons do more damage to them. Moreover, this armor lets you carry two additional Grenades with you which can work wonders in killing Terminids and destroying their Eggs simultaneously.
While the above approach works fine, a strategy we like to use on this mission involves the use of two Orbital Strategems. The Orbital EMS Strike is the first one, causing stun damage and immobilizing any enemies that are caught in its blast once deployed. With the Terminids unable to move, you can use the Orbital Gas Strike to introduce a cloud of toxic gas to the site, which wipes out bugs and Eggs with ease.
The cloud lasts 15 seconds which is more than enough time to take out smaller enemies while dealing a lot of damage to larger ones with the added benefit of wiping out Eggs that may be in hard to reach places, protected by rock formations and the like. A stealthy approach works best with this strategy as you could wipe out Terminid defenses without them ever knowing you were there to begin with!
Remember that the gas is toxic to all life forms, which includes you and members of your squad. Take care to find a safe position from which you can aim it at the center of a Terminid site and just watch as they are wiped out without you having to lift a finger. You could always use your weapons tod eal with any stragglers which makes the entire mission a walk in the park.
Either of these strategies lets you complete Purge Hatcheries mission with ease. Pay attention to enemy compositions on higher difficulties and plan your attacks wisely in order to make the most out of your loadouts and exterminate the Terminid threats from assigned areas.
