The most-awaited Elden Ring DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, is on its way. Players have been eagerly expecting this expansion for a long time; some have even started their Elden Ring journey again to get a recap of the base game. At this point, if you haven’t yet learned how to respec characters in the base game, you must check it out to get prepared for the upcoming DLC.

Though Runes are plentiful in number in Elden Ring, players still need to be aware of how to spend them. Wasting Runes won’t help you anyway. So, ensure you are spending them properly, especially saving them to respec your character. Don’t worry if you haven’t yet figured out the process. We are here to help you with all the required information.

Life Lessons: Use This to Respec Your Elden Ring Character Ahead of Shadow of the Erdtree

Interacting with Rennala will allow players to rearrange their stats in Elden Ring.

If you have started your Elden Ring journey for the first time, you may not have realized the necessity of respeccing your character stats. Well, that’s not a problem. Let me explain: respeccing is a tradition that almost every Dark Souls game by FromSoftware includes. This feature allows players to reallocate their stats to get new abilities.

Players can make strong builds using this feature as they progress through the game and unlock new stats for their characters. The initial build of your character may not seem suitable in the late game. In that case, you can spend some Runes and reallocate your stats according to your preferences. However, the trick here is that this feature is not available by default. Instead, players need to unlock the respec stats option to access the menu.

To unlock the respec option, players need to make their way to the Raya Lucaria Academy and take down Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. The fight is not an easy one. The boss is going to give you a hard time beating her. However, once you defeat her, she will drop the Great Rune of the Unborn. This Rune will help players interact with Rennala at the Raya Lucaria Grand Library. This interaction will unlock the rebirth and reset options for the players.

Well, once you defeat Rennala, the boss will become a friendly NPC who will set up a shop that you can access anytime after that. However, there’s still a catch.

Speaking to Rennala will only take you to the menu from where you can respec your stats, but this won’t help you reallocate anything unless you get Larvel Tears. Whenever you want to rearrange your stats, you have to offer Rennala a Larvel Tear. As many times as you want to reallocate your stats, you have to find Larvel Tears for them. Without Larvel Tears, there’s no way you can do anything.

Where to Find Larvel Tears in Elden Ring

Larvel Tears are the only item that can help players respec their stats.

Each time you want to respec a stat, it requires you to spend a Larvel Tear. That’s the rule, and there’s no alternative to it. If you are a veteran player who has gone through this journey before, you must have a good idea of the locations, but for newcomers, things are twisted. They will struggle to find Larvel Tears unless they know the exact locations.

However, it is hard to tell the exact locations of the Larvel Tears in the game. They’re scattered throughout the map, and players will get a handful of them at every location. For example, Liurnia has three Larvel Tears to get, and among them, two will be found in the Caria Manor. Similarly, Nokron, Eternal City, Siofra River, Altus Plateau, Mt. Gelmir, and almost all other regions have a few of these tears to find and use whenever required.

Larvel Tears are particularly, a bit challenging to find. That’s mostly because of their limited number. Players can find only a few of them, and if they don’t make proper use of these Tears, they will lose the opportunity to reallocate their stats at the end of the journey. So, don’t randomly respec stats.

When Should You Respec Stats in Elden Ring?

Respeccing stats will help players for sure but don’t use them randomly without proper requirements.

That’s another major thing to keep in mind. Once they beat Rennala and she becomes a friendly NPC, players can visit her whenever they want to respec their stats, but that’s not an unlimited feature. The respec stat number is dependent on the number of Larvel Tears. To be precise, players can find 18 Larvel Tears per playthrough. So, they can respec their stats only 18 times during a single playthrough.

If you want to respec your character more than 18 times, you have to start a new playthrough. Keeping this restriction in mind, we suggest not to waste them without any reason. Instead, save them for the later section of the game, where the most challenging bosses will appear. Whenever you are going to fight a powerful enemy, you can consider respeccing the stats according to your requirements.

On that note, remember, you can choose to increase or decrease your stats based on your requirements, but you can’t go below the base stat of your class. For example, if your starting class is an Astrologer, your base intelligence point is 16. There’s no way your intelligence will go down below 16.

That’s more or less everything players should know to respec their characters in Elden Ring before starting the Shadow of the Erdtree journey. Keeping these things in mind will help you create a strong character to start the DLC. Maybe these stats won’t help you throughout the entire Shadow of the Erdtree journey, but they can still give you a smooth beginning where at least the starting enemies won’t give you a hard time fighting them.
