SUMMARY
  • With Sony's announcement of a technical presentation by lead architect Mark Cerny, whispers of the PS5 Pro begin to grow louder.
  • Sony is expected to follow up on its own tease with a complete unveiling of its mid-gen upgrade to the PS5.
  • Players remain cynical about the upgrade, worrying over its capabilities and the need for a new console in the first place.

PlayStation fans are sure to be on the edge of their seats for a “Technical Presentation” from Sony, which is almost certainly meant to announce the PlayStation 5 Pro. When the PlayStation 5 launched in late 2020, the console found itself at a unique crossroads. With more demand than supply being a problem for Sony caused by a global pandemic, the company was forced to extend the shelf life of its PlayStation 4, making developers follow suit.

With many games seemingly held back from what they were truly capable of on account of being developed for previous-gen consoles as well as their current-gen counterparts, the PlayStation 5 has managed to keep up with whatever modern games have thrown at it.

The PS5 Pro Faces an Uphill Journey

The PlayStation 5 far surpasses its predecessor’s power, and the PS5 Pro faces a challenge from its own home turf.

While supply and demand for PS5s is now back to normalcy and the console doing very well over its main competitor, Sony seems all but ready to unveil a mid-generation upgrade to its flagship console, with the PS5 Pro reportedly bringing improved hardware and optimizations to allow for gaming power that pushes Sony’s boundaries while being a new obstacle for its competitors.

However, that may not be the case if responses to the below post are any indication.

While the PS5 Pro’s rumored announcement is sure to make a lot of fans happy, some PlayStation 5 owners remain cautiously optimistic about the upgrade while others question the need for it entirely.

Do We Really Need a PS5 Pro?

The PS5 Pro is set to extend Sony’s new designs for its consoles when it is finally announced.

While the current generation of gaming is nowhere close to achieving its limits from technical and graphical standpoints, the current library of games on offer at the PlayStation Store does not push the PS5 to its limits when compared to similar offerings at the same time in the PS4’s life cycle.

Even visually stunning and action-heavy titles like Black Myth: Wukong are running with little to no problems on Sony’s flagship console, making many players question the need for its tradition of giving its flagship consoles a midlife upgrade.

It seems that Sony has already disregarded this suggestion, with developers reportedly being asked to optimize any titles released after September 16, 2024, to be playable on the PS5 Pro – but many players seem to think that its purported upgrades may not be worth its price.

Another PlayStation fan worries that the presentation may not include enough details to make a properly informed purchase decision on the PS5 Pro.

While the time frame for Sony’s presentation is admittedly short, players will hope that the company unveils a successor to the PS5 that can justify choosing to upgrade over a console that continues to be at the top of its game.
