SUMMARY
  • Star Wars Outlaws was released only a few days ago, and already, the sales reports are pretty concerning for the developer.
  • Even after taking inspiration from so many renowned franchises, Star Wars Outlaws couldn't satisfy the expectations of fans.
  • Two consecutive failures have made the situation tougher for Ubisoft in the French gaming market.

Star Wars is not only one of the most successful gaming series but also an iconic movie series. Going toward the Star Wars gaming series, it has been successfully running with multiple widely popular installments in possession. However, this record is about to be broken with the latest Star Wars Outlaws, as this game is performing below expectations.

Set in the Star Wars universe, the gameplay of Outlaws lets players witness events between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. While the game features an open world to roam around and engage in different activities, players somehow did not get impressed with the storyline and gameplay, which impacted the sales of the game.

Star Wars Outlaws Narrative Director Shared His Views During an Interview

Star Wars Outlaws narrative director has taken inspiration from multiple renowned franchises and entities, but sadly, nothing really worked for it.

After creating considerable hype, the game was released on August 30, 2024. However, a month before that, the narrative director of the game sat for an interview and talked about a wide array of topics during an international media event.

The discussion ranged from anime to George Lucas, and the narrative director, Navid Khavari, revealed that the team took inspiration from all these to develop Star Wars Outlaws. He specifically mentioned that the team explored all these inspirations to make the game better.

At one point, he even talked about Clint Eastwood. According to him, his successful career in the film industry as an actor and filmmaker inspired Khavari to the extent that he “couldn’t stop thinking about Clint Eastwood.”

However, after the release of Star Wars Outlaws and its miserable performance, it seems like inspiration is not all that the game’s narrative director should have taken from the success of Eastwood.

Constant Downward Sales of Star Wars Outlaws Have Become a Concern for Developers

Despite games often performing below expectations, two consecutive failures seem to have caused Ubisoft a lot of trouble in the gaming market.

The 2024 Star Wars game may not be the best. Even though it is probably not an up-to-the-mark game, the game still has several iconic locations featured that have attracted the attention of gamers. However, these couldn’t save its sales.

While sometimes it happens that games don’t perform according to expectations, in the case of Star Wars Outlaws, it has gone so far that it seems to have caused Ubisoft a “stock crash.”

A recent X (formerly Twitter) post by serkantoto showed the latest market cap and stated,

Shares lost over 10% combined in the last 2 days, so the company just slipped to under €2B in market cap in Paris.

Following the same tone, another X user, ultrapurwater, posted a screenshot of a report that stated that the two consecutive failures by Ubisoft, including Star Wars Outlaws, have caused its shares to fall in the French video game market.

The report also revealed it was the lowest since 2015, and this decline has been driven by the failure of the latest game.

Therefore, the developer has taken strong inspiration from famous series and entities to develop the game, but players somehow didn’t like the way they were implemented.

So, at this point, it could be hard for Ubisoft to regain its former glorious position after two massive failures.
