Exploration is the key to completing Ghost of Tsushima. The vast world of the game can’t be explored to its fullest without the help of mobility items, and here come the mounts or grappling hooks. Though Jin’s horse is the primary transportation method in the game, a few situations require something more effective. Most of the time, when it comes to climbing, nothing is better than a grappling hook.

Samuais generally have some signature weapons and tools in their possession, and a grappling hook is among them. Therefore, Jin’s use of a grappling hook doesn’t seem unique. Instead, at points, it seems to be something necessary to have in Jin’s possession. So, if you are trying to know where to find the grappling hook, this guide will give a complete walkthrough of the process.

How to Unlock Grappling Hook in Ghost of Tsushima

A grappling hook is the fastest way to travel distance, or, to be more specific, climb up mountains or platforms. Unfortunately, this one is not going to add to your arsenal right after you start your journey. Instead, unlocking the grappling hook requires players to reach almost the end of Act 1 and complete a specific mission named “Iron Hook.” Don’t worry, the grappling hook is a non-missable item that players will definitely pick up at some point before they make their way to Act 2.

To begin with the process, start recruiting all the allies in Act 1. Start completing the missions marked on the map with golden icons. These missions will eventually bring you close to Yuna’s missions, where you have to help Yuna with a few activities. These missions include The Warrior’s Code, The Broken Blacksmith, Hammer and Forge, and The Tale of Ryuzo. None of these missions are challenging, and they mostly require Jin to help Yuna find her brother Taka, help her in missions with Ryuzo, etc.

Once Jin completes all these missions and sets up the forge, a new mission named Iron Hook will be unlocked. In this mission, players will find the grappling hook in the beginning but still have to continue and meet Yuna and Taka to rescue some prisoners. Reaching these prisoners requires a grappling hook. After these prisoners are rescued, the grappling hook is all set to be enjoyed.

These are what players need to do to have the grappling hook, but that’s not the end. After you get the hook, it is time to understand its use.

How to Use Grappling Hook in Ghost of Tsushima

Generally, games that feature grappling hooks allow players to use them randomly whenever needed, but Ghost of Tsushima has restricted Jin’s use of the grappling hook. In this game, Jin can’t use it whenever he wants, but the game will give indications to let him know when to use it. For example, whenever you see old tree branches or pillars with red and white ropes tied to them, press the instructed button to activate the hook.

SUGGESTED: All Haiku Locations in Ghost of Tsushima (Main Game)

For PlayStation players pressing R2 will activate the hook and players can grapple through these specific points to reach their destination. Apart from these marked locations, there’s no way to use the hook anywhere else. Jin can climb or swing using the grappling hook, but there’s no way he can use it to pull his enemies towards him during combat. So, the grappling hook is almost useless when it comes to fighting enemies.

However, sometimes the grappling hook can help players escape strong enemies or aggressive enemy forces. Of course, grapple points should be required around the location. So, whenever you are going to a new location, make sure to check the surrounding areas properly to know the exact points to use the grappling hook.
