Of all the many enemies Horizon Forbidden West throws at Aloy, some are just more of a threat when faced head-on. From Tremortusks to Slitherfangs, post-apocalyptic Earth is just filled with threats to deal with.

But some threats loom larger than others. They become a lot scarier when they can take down even the most dangerous machines with ease. Or perhaps control them somehow. That’s what Tenakth rebel leader Regalla is all about.

The Terror of the Tenakth

Angela Bassett certainly put the ‘regal‘ in Regalla.

Regalla seeks to bring down Tenakth Chief Hekarro by any means necessary. She is a tenacious and calculating opponent encountered early on in the game’s main story. However, it is only when Aloy enters the Forbidden West to search for GAIA‘s sub-functions that Regalla begins to loom large over the story.

Aloy quickly learns about her history with the Tenakth chief and her determination to take his life for what she perceives as poor leadership. It is only through beating her that Aloy can earn the trust of the Tenakth and be rewarded with what she came to them for.

Beating Regalla can be quite a challenge, however. Although Aloy can weaken her grip on Tenakth territory by taking down her camps, the chance to take her on comes a lot later in the story.

How to Beat Regalla in Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Forbidden West really does its big fights justice.

Regalla is unique among the human bosses in Horizon Forbidden West, given that the fight against her takes place in three distinct phases. Remember to equip frost-resistant armor to give Aloy a defensive edge in this fight.

During the story mission Wings of the Ten, you begin the fight in a cramped arena with limited room to move. Regalla comes at you with a series of quick melee attacks. While your bow could work when you manage to create space, it is better to use well-timed dodges to create opportunities to counter with your spear.

Once you bring down her health by about a third, the fight shifts to a ranged arena, with Regalla raining down arrows from an elevated platform. Use the cover available while watching out for explosive arrows that can blow up specific sections. Concentration is a worthwhile skill to have, as it can slow down the fight enough to let you land a few headshots.

More of a marathon than a sprint.

For the final third of her health bar, Regalla takes things up a notch, mixing her melee and ranged fighting styles to create some serious problems for Aloy. Once again, using Concentration to land headshots is a great way to end the fight quickly. They are especially effective once you break through Regalla’s helmet.

Some attacks to watch out for in this phase include a leaping attack in which Regalla quickly closes the distance to assault Aloy with her sword, plasma spike clusters that she can toss down to create traps, and a move where she can kick up dust and vanish for a stealth attack. Using acid and frost-based ammunition can give Aloy a much-needed edge in the fight.

As one of the story’s main antagonists, Regalla can be counted as one of the toughest enemies in the game. It is important to remember that this fight is a battle of attrition, and a methodical approach can save you a lot of trouble and failed attempts. With a bit of caution and strategic attacking, Regalla finally goes down.

We recommend sparing her for some really good story beats later down the line.
