Rise of the Ronin gives players a lot of freedom to explore a stunning open-world rendition of ancient Japan. And this world is alive with events that occur along your path, like Chance Encounters.

Exploring an area can even unlock new missions as you progress them, and even Bond Missions in some cases. The Black Jewel is one such mission that your Ronin can unlock, introducing them to a mysterious American foreigner in dire circumstances.

Waiting on the World to Change

While exploring the Ota region in Yokohama, pay special attention to its side content like Veiled Edge Banners, Public Order Encounters, Cats, Shrines, Photographs, and Fugitive Encounters. Each of these activities increases your Bond Level with that region and unlocks further opportunities to improve that level.

Once your Bond Level with Ota is high enough, look for the Bond Mission marker on your map, directing you to The Black Jewel.

Accept his request to retrieve his luggage, and head west up the slope towards the cliffside, where you will find a cave entrance. There is a lot of tall grass in the next open area, allowing you to get the jump on the enemies here.

At the mission starting point is an American who seems to have misplaced all of his belongings – his clothes included. He explains that he lost them to bandits in a nearby cave holding a valuable stock of coal, which was what had him there in the first place.

Report back to the American to trigger some dialogue. Choose the options “Even if you were lying, it wouldn’t bother me.” and “You needed help.” to generate some unique dialogue. Either way, the American asks you to meet him at the Yokohama Grand Villa to collect your reward at your convenience.

There are two paths for your Ronin to follow, and the one going southwest is the one to follow. You eventually find a ladder going down, and some more bandits to deal with. Clear them out and loot the nearby chest to complete your objective.

However, simply handing over his belongings completes The Black Jewel Bond Mission earning you 1600 Coins, 15XP, a Treatise on Enlightenment, a Western Cigar, a Foreign Book, and some Pulverised Coal. Quite a rewarding encounter, we’d say.
