How to Complete A Prize Beyond Reach (Bond Mission) in Rise of the Ronin
A Prize Beyond Reach is an important mission you'll want to be paying special attention to...
Team Ninja’s massive open-world rendition of ancient Japan in Rise of the Ronin comes with a truly eclectic collection of characters. Unlike the shogunate’s unwillingness to open its borders to foreign trade, the game’s supporting cast features prominent figures of Japanese, American, and British origins for players to interact and engage with.
Bond Missions facilitate these interactions, allowing you to explore their stories and understand what drives these individuals to do the things they do. From Genzui’s extremist take on how to deal with the foreign “invaders” to Ryoma’s compassionate stance on how to take his country to new heights, there is no dearth of tales to explore!
Affable and Adorable
The game’s second act introduces players to Mr. Robert Fortune, a respected botanist with a heart of gold. His friendly demeanor hides a deep-seated passion for botanical discoveries, quickly endearing the Scottish botanist to the titular ronin as well as his fellow cast members.
Indeed, you first encounter Mr. Fortune over the course of another Bond Mission, one that you undertake for the physician Ine Katsumoto called Fruit From Distant Shores. This mission introduces your ronin to Mr. Fortune over the course of your quest to find a cure for the cholera epidemic plaguing the Japanese citizenry.
He is more than helpful, providing the lemons you require without a moment’s hesitation in the aftermath of your encounter with the mysterious American woman.
Building a bond with Mr. Fortune is not only beneficial in gaining perspective on the game’s intricate story but comes with other benefits as well. For instance, he unlocks the gardening ability for your longhouse, allowing you to share in his love for Japanese horticulture and nature in general. This allows you to harvest various crafting materials without having to search for them in the open world – or spend your hard-earned cash buying them.
What’s more, he serves as a focal point for other characters’ Bond Missions as well, making him an important addition to your growing list of friends.
How to Complete A Prize Beyond Reach in Rise of the Ronin
After your initial encounter with Mr. Fortune in the previously mentioned Bond Mission, you soon find that he requests your presence at the Koishikawa Botanical Gardens in Edo.
Upon reaching the gardens, simply interact with Mr. Fortune to begin the mission. He informs you that he is smitten with a certain woman and asks you for your advice on how best to pursue her. Exhaust all available dialogue options until the option “What do you want to do?” shows up.
Selecting this option will prompt him to decide that flowers are the best way to take his budding romance forward. He then asks you to put a bouquet of flowers together for him as he does not want to risk another attack by going for them himself.
Proceed to the search areas marked on your map. Take note of the other Bond Mission icon in the area titled An Intoxicating Flower. It is recommended that you complete Mr. Fortune’s request first, as beginning that mission immediately locks you out of completing this one.

Proceed to the three search areas, looking for bunches of bright pink flowers while dealing with several wild boars in your way. You could either fight them or tame them based on the skills you have at your disposal.
Once you have three pink flowers in your possession hand them over to Mr. Fortune back at the botanical gardens. You will be automatically transported to the Pleasure District in Edo at this point as he asks you to accompany him as he delivers them to his lady love.
She is none other than Usugumo Dayu, who has tasked you with finding her lost cats scattered across Japan. Small world, isn’t it?
Interact with her to begin a cutscene after which you will encounter one of the larger brutes who you will have to deal with. While they are not much of a threat, the cramped spaces and weird camera angles can prove to be the bigger challenge here!
Successfully defeating the brute completes the mission.
