Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s latest operator skin has created a few problems for Sledgehammer Games.

Sledgehammer’s attempt to win over its players with the release of a new skin for Sergeant John “Soap” MacTavish, an important part of the game’s team of protagonists Task Force 141, has not gone as well as it would have liked. Spoilers follow for the campaign, but the Scottish sniper and demolitions expert met his end at the hands of Vladimir Makarov, the Russian terrorist and antagonist of the narrative, nobly intervening in order to save SAS Captain John Price in the game’s concluding battle.

MacTavish’s sacrifice has clearly endeared him to fans of Modern Warfare 3 who were eagerly requesting a specific skin for the character. However, the choice to release a cel-shaded version of the skin may have backfired on Sledgehammer if player responses on channels like Reddit are any indication.

Call of Duty Fans Come Down Heavily on the Hawk Skin for Soap

Fans of Soap’s character are not happy with his new look in the game.

While the new Hawk skin for Soap does give the character a refreshing new look in the game, it may have been a tone-deaf addition considering his role in the campaign’s events, with players expecting a more serious tribute to the character.

The Reddit post below showcases just how unhappy players are with the new addition while its responses could give Treyarch and Raven Software a few pointers ahead of Black Ops 6’s release.

One player’s response is a perfect summary of why Soap’s new look in Modern Warfare 3 has received such a poor response – with the suggestion that a cel-shaded skin does not fit well with the game’s overall visual style.

Other players were quick to agree, although they lamented the fact that similar skins could very well make their way into Black Ops 6 later down the line.

It is disappointing that Sledgehammer Games chose to create such a tone-deaf addition to the game in the wake of an excellent operator skin based on The Crow, a newly released gothic film based on a popular graphic novel.

Activision and Sledgehammer Games will certainly hope that future content for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 garners a better response from players, although that may hinge on the studios paying attention to the feedback they receive and acting on it.
