Helldivers 2 Players and Democracy Win as PlayStation Backtracks on Controversial PSN Decision
Sony's update on the situation comes after a massive review bombing on Steam.
It’s been a rough few days for Helldivers 2, as Sony announced that every player will have to create a PlayStation Network account to continue playing Arrowhead’s game. That didn’t sit well with the majority of the community for numerous reasons, with the unavailability of PSN in many countries being at the forefront.
However, in true Helldivers fashion, democracy has prevailed, players have had their complaints heard, and Sony has backtracked on its controversial PSN decision, saving the shooter from receiving further damage.
PSN Accounts Won’t Be Mandatory to Play Helldivers 2
Sony’s initial decision ended up hurting Arrowhead’s game, and everything that the developer has been able to accomplish with its latest title this year was at risk. The situation escalated when PC players started to review bomb Helldivers 2 on Steam, and what was an amazing title just a few days ago now has Mostly Negative reviews.
From Valve’s platform giving out refunds for the Helldivers sequel and breaking its own Terms of Service to massive player outrage, things were starting to take a dark turn for Arrowhead and Pilestedt’s magnum opus.
A live-service game can only survive if it keeps managing to retain its player base, so it would not have made sense for PlayStation to ignore the intense feedback of the fans, leading the company to officially address and reverse the decision.
The dreaded update for the Helldivers sequel was supposed to roll out on May 6, making it mandatory for all players to link their PSN accounts to the game, but fans can rest easy knowing that Sony is not implementing anything of the sort any longer.
PlayStation Is Still Learning How to Navigate the PC Demographic
From May 30 onwards, PC players would have had to create PSN accounts and link their Steam IDs to them, which felt like an unnecessary hassle, so hearing that the update will not be moving forward is a cause for relief.

In its latest announcement, aside from letting Helldivers fans know that their feedback has been heard, Sony also mentioned that the company is “still learning what is best for PC players.”
Considering how Sony was not really known for giving its video games simultaneous releases on both PlayStation and PC before Arrowhead Game Studios’ title came out, its lack of experience in the latter demographic clearly showed in its initial decision.
Now that the Helldivers community can finally move on from this unneeded controversy, it can look forward to more content from Arrowhead Game Studios that made the title so great in the first place.
