From the portrayal of the characters to the careful detailing of all the mythological events, this series has inclined the idea of action-adventure games to a new height. If you have played all the God of War games, you can proudly claim that you are aware of the entire story, but still, there might be a few things that you have missed. A few Easter Eggs or hidden references that you have seen but didn’t notice. In this guide, we will highlight some of these hidden God of War gems that you might have missed during your playthrough.

7. A Huge Scar on Kratos’ Body

If you have played Ghosts of Sparta and the later installments of the series, you might have noticed that Kratos has a huge scar on his abs. Whilst the graphics do allow this sort of detail to be included, it is minor enough that many of us may have missed it. Well, that’s a reference to the last scene of God of War III where Kratos hits himself with the Blade of Olympus. The scar clearly shows the continuation of the story from God of War III, and the developer’s dedication to even the smallest details.

6. Kratos’ Armor and the Omega Symbol

god of war

From the beginning of the God of War series, if you have noticed Kratos wears red armor. This may not seem something unique but there’s a hidden reference to Kratos’ Spartan origin. In Ancient times, Greek soldiers used to wear red armor during battles and the developers of the game gave the same touch to the protagonist of the game to signify his warrior self and spartan origin.

Another Easter Egg related to the franchise that players might not have paid attention to. The Omega symbol has been part of the title from the beginning. Even Kratos has an Omega symbol attached to his back to hold the Leviathan Axe. Though this doesn’t really make anything noticeable, they again hint at Greek mythology. In Ancient Greece, the Omega symbol used to be tied with Chronos. He used to carry the name Omega written on the globe with his lance in his hand.

5. The Original Name of Faye

god of war

Throughout the later God of War games, we have heard the name of Faye several times. She was the wife of Kratos and the mother of Atreus. But none of us probably thought of exploring her original name as we have taken it to be her name. There we missed the easter egg that the game has provided us.

The original name of Faye was Laufey. In Norse mythology, you will find the reference to Laufey as the giantess mother of Loki. In God of War as well, we will get this reference. But Kratos has shortened the name just like he did with Atreus. Throughout their journey, Kratos never calls him by his name, but refers to his son as, ‘Boy.’

4. Reference to Farbauti

god of war

Now that we have been talking about the actual identity of Faye, there’s another thing that players might have missed. While Kratos and Atreus were exploring Jotunheim, the game presented us with some murals and the name ‘Farbauti.’ This is the name of Loki’s father. If you don’t think about the context carefully, you won’t be able to understand the connection between Kratos and Farbauti.

The game revealed that Atreus was going to be Loki; therefore, as his father, it was Kratos who was mentioned as Farbauti in the mythology. Additionally, Farbauti means cruel striker. This clearly refers to Kratos’ slaying of the Greek and Norse Deities.

3. Kratos Got a New Voice

god of war

If you have played the games of the God of War series, you might have noticed that Kratos’ voice was different in the 2018 installment. Terrence C. Carson used to give his voice to this powerful demi-god, but due to some changes to the policy of Santa Monica Studio, he was replaced by Christopher Judge. This is essentially because of their new policy of casting the same actors for voice and motion. The developers must have highlighted the size difference between Atreus and Kratos. So, they changed the voice actor, and in doing so gave us one of the greatest performances in recent video game history.

2. Ghost of Sparta Reference

After Kratos and Atreus entered the Temple of Tears, they eventually discovered lots of treasures. But that’s not what we are going to talk about here. A side of the temple has a few pots that have clearly shown the Greek pottery arts. Among them, players might have noticed that a vase has an image of Kratos standing on a pile of dead bodies with his Blade of Chaos in his hand. It signifies the young Kratos at the peak of his destructive path. However, Kratos immediately destroyed it.

1. Ratatoskr Reference

god of war

There’s no way you have missed Ratatoskr in God of War Ragnarok. Though this squirrel showed up in God of War 2018, his key appearance was in Ragnarok. If you have ignored this squirrel as an imaginary character, you have missed an Easter Egg. Ratatoskr is a Norse mythological character whose task was to carry messages up and down the World Tree Yggdrasil. He used to carry messages to all the Nine Realms. However, most frequently he was seen exchanging messages between the Eagles who lived at the top of Yggdrasil, and Nidhoggr, who lived at the bottom of the World Tree.

These are only a few gems and hidden references that players might have missed in the God of War series.
