Epic Games is navigating some tricky waters with Fortnite Creative. As the company aims to expand the game both in scope and its technical capability, it seems the latter has come at a price.

The platform’s support for its Battle Royale Island mode is slated to end this month, removing a set of capabilities from the Battle Royale mode that has left many fans disappointed. The mode’s popularity is only highlighted by the fact that Epic Games has chosen to discontinue it to redirect its efforts toward bringing an advanced creator platform live by 2025.

Looks like a lot of Fortnite players love their custom Battle Royale Islands.

As a feature on Battle Royale Island, Creator Royale allowed Fortnite players to completely customize the island. From in-game rules and modifications to opening inventories and even the layout of the island, this mode puts a lot of control in players’ hands.

Its popularity among fans of multiplayer games is evident from distressed tweets lamenting the exit of a mode in which a player could invite all of their friends to an island made entirely to their specifications.

For Players, By Players

Custom Islands really brought out some cool ideas.

While Fortnite Creative under the Unreal Editor for Fornite (UEFN) will add a lot of layers to creating unique experiences, the removal of the Battle Royale Island from the platform has raised a few eyebrows.

Some players even questioned the logic of Epic Games’ latest removal, rightly pointing out that it would violate the very purpose of Fortnite Creative.

However, with the UEFN on PC next year, creating new Fornite experiences is set to expand in scope, as the platform adds a lot of options for customization.

While it’s unclear why Battle Royale was taken out of Fortnite Creative, the company’s explanation about its commitment to UEFN’s 2025 timeline does highlight an intention to give players more control over their individual experiences – or the ones they share with their friends. But it does raise questions about taking away one of their most popular modes of expressing creative liberties away from its players to achieve that goal.

With the announcement coming at a turbulent time for Fortnite this year, only time will tell if the new UEFN-powered Fortnite Creative can win back its players who miss their custom Battle Royale Islands.
