SUMMARY
  • In one of the standout moments during Gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live, the next Borderlands has been revealed.
  • Gearbox Software announced Borderlands 4 with a short and vague teaser trailer, stealing the show and proving to be a highlight.
  • After the less than ideal reception that the Borderlands film adaptation recently received, the fanbase truly needed a silver lining.

The Borderlands fanbase finally has something positive to look forward to after the franchise’s recent fumble while trying its hand in the realm of film. Not only has the new movie adaptation, starring quite a few heavy-hitters from Hollywood, brought everyone on the same page regarding the effectiveness of game-to-film adaptations in the current, relatively better era, but even the gaming series itself has not seen a mainline installment in nearly five years.

Fortunately, as the Borderlands community tries to move past the remains of the Eli Roth-directed movie, Gearbox Software has emerged as a silver lining in quite a dark cloud with its impactful appearance at Gamescom 2024.

Gearbox Software Announces Borderlands 4 at Gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live

It has been quite some time since the Borderlands video game series received a new mainline installment.
It has been quite some time since the Borderlands video game series received a new mainline installment.

Easily one of the standout highlights from the Opening Night Live event at Gamescom 2024, Gearbox Software’s announcement proved to be a major part of the show, as the developer and publisher 2K revealed the next mainline entry in the long-running video game series.

Sharing the existence of Borderlands 4 with a teaser trailer that does not really show or tell much regarding where the franchise’s narrative could be heading, all it took was a shot of the iconic Psycho Bandit Mask to get the fanbase hyped up.

The footage also revealed a vague release window that the developers are aiming for, as fans will be able to dive back into the action sometime next year, in 2025.

Set to be the first time that the Borderlands series is solely a current-gen experience, as the third mainline game was actually launched during the final year of the PlayStation 4’s official run, the upcoming entry will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC through Steam and Epic Games Store.

The Borderlands Fanbase Is Not Letting the Film’s Failure Hinder Its Excitement

Leaving the previous console generation behind, Borderlands 4 is aiming to be a definitive current-gen experience.

Perhaps the timing of Gearbox Software revealing the highly anticipated mainline Borderlands installment is not that coincidental, as the Cate Blanchett-led film adaptation was just released a couple of weeks ago.

It definitely seems like the developers expected the movie to do quite well, because it would have been a great streak for the Borderlands franchise if a well-received film adaptation was followed by the teaser trailer for the fourth mainline game. Unfortunately, even the extremely strong star power could not save the movie from turning out to be a flop, which became a driving force for Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford to persuade people to check it out these past couple of weeks.

Regardless of the unfavorable reception of the film, Borderlands fans are still looking forward to what Gearbox Software has in store for them in the next installment, pointing out that although the series has not had the greatest narrative direction in recent times, if there is one thing that keeps them coming back, it is the unique and fun gameplay.

Naturally, the fanbase hopes that the developers actually pay attention to what the community has been complaining about regarding the Borderlands 3 storyline, but knows for a fact that it is likely going to be more satisfying than what Kevin Hart and the rest of the film’s team presented.

The teaser trailer for the next installment is accompanied by a darker tone than what the series is usually known for, so perhaps Gearbox could actually bring some glory back to its flagship IP, and with Borderlands 3 now more accessible than ever, it seems like the right time to revisit the title to prepare for the future.
