SUMMARY
  • Obsidian Entertainment is still working on Avowed, and it takes all the player feedback seriously to make the gameplay better.
  • Though the initial gameplay experience of Avowed didn't highlight the combat system of the game positively, recently, the scenario has changed.
  • Avowed has too many features and content to offer to players; at least the Gamescom appearance hinted at it.

Obsidian Entertainment and Xbox Game Studios have been preparing to launch their next action RPG Avowed next year. The scheduled release date for the game is February 18, 2025, and mostly, the response from the players is positive toward Avowed. However, some negative feedback is still in the air, especially about the game’s combat system.

Like most other games, Avowed appeared at Gamescom 2024 with a playable demo, and the problem started there. Players again started giving mixed reactions to the game’s combat system. However, this could become the game’s strength instead of its biggest weakness.

Obsidian Entertainment’s Avowed Combat System Criticism Takes a Magical Turn

Avowed‘s weakness turns into its strength, as players find the combat system fluid and varied.

Initially announced in 2020, Obsidian Entertainment’s development process has been going on for a long time. However, when the first trailer for the game was released in 2023, players were divided into groups to express their opinions about the gameplay, which led to a controversy about the combat system of the game.

Fortunately, the developer did consider the feedback from players and made some changes to the combat system, which was showcased in the Gamescom appearance. While mostly it received a positive reception from players, a few things still got mixed reactions.

While some players aren’t happy with the melee battle system, others don’t find the magic great. Therefore, this should have been one of the greatest drawbacks of the game, but it could change into something positive.

On Reddit, a few days back, Fireman523567 talked about this feedback and mentioned that the combat system was cool and “varied.” In every footage, he has found the combat mechanics fluid and full of different fighting styles and abilities. Therefore, he stated,

“It almost sounds like Obsidian balanced the play styles so well people are just naturally falling into what they like and criticizing the other playstyles.

Along with games like Crimson Desert, Avowed stunned players with its Gamescom appearance this year. The game has way too many things to explore than players have thought.

Obsidian Entertainment has loads of things to offer to players that they haven’t probably thought of after watching the initial trailers.

Obsidian Entertainment is pretty renowned for making first- and third-person RPGs. Therefore, Avowed creating great hype is something expected. However, the trailers had disappointed players to some extent, but once again the developer proved them wrong.

Avowed’s gameplay was restricted to concerned authorities, but when players got the chance to play it, they were all impressed by what the game offered. The game has plenty of exploration, different character classes, varied paths to choose from, puzzles to solve, and most importantly, challenging boss fights.

However, above everything, the game has incredible visuals. The graphics of the game are top-notch, which were kind of blunt in the trailers. The colorful portrayal of Eora has won the hearts of the fans in the demo.

The game has also been running smoothly without much lag. About this matter, a few days ago, Obsidian’s art director Matt Hansen revealed that the game will run on 30FPS, as for first-person games, 60FPS is not necessary.

He confirmed it will make the team provide players with better VFX, as they don’t want to lose the visual appeal of Avowed.
