Before the launch of Helldivers 2 a few months ago, PlayStation was not really making significant contributions to the live-service multiplayer realm of gaming. The platform usually puts most of its focus on immersive and narrative-driven single-player video games, but the kind of massive success that Arrowhead Game Studios managed to achieve has made a lot of things clearer for Sony.

Not only has the company realized that releasing its games simultaneously on both PS5 and PC is actually quite a great business model from a financial standpoint, but it also understood the kind of potential that live-service titles can have if they are handled correctly.

Sony Is Releasing Another Live-Service Game This Year After Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 has created an impressive community in just a few months, and the upcoming live-service game is aiming for a similar purpose.
Helldivers 2 has created an impressive community in just a few months, and the upcoming live-service game is aiming for a similar purpose.

It has been almost a year since the PlayStation community was officially introduced to Concord during the platform’s 2023 Showcase, but not much else has been revealed about the upcoming live-service video game.

However, in its latest FY2023 Consolidated Financial Results report, which covers updates up until March 31, 2024, while also discussing what is next for the company during the rest of the year, Sony confirmed that it is gearing up for more multiplayer titles after Arrowhead Game Studios’ unexpected triumph.

The first of these will be Bungie’s The Final Shape expansion for Destiny 2, which is launching in less than a month on June 4, but the company also reassured its player base that Firewalk Studios’ first-person shooter title is still “scheduled to be released this year.”

Considering how Arrowhead Game Studios’ video game “has been a hit that far exceeded expectations,” it would make complete sense for Sony to try and keep the momentum going in the live-service gaming market. And even with the limited footage that has been shared with the players, Concord could prove to be another successful multiplayer effort by PlayStation.

Concord was revealed on May 24, 2023, during last year’s PlayStation Showcase, and since there have been speculations about the next event taking place sometime this month, it would not be too surprising if it happens by the end of the coming week.

A lot of time has passed since the live-service video game’s initial reveal, so it would be fitting and kind of poetic for Sony to share a more extensive look at the project and what the player base can expect from it.

Until now, all the community knows is that Firewalk Studios is bringing a “vibrant sci-fi universe” and that it is also going to be a community-driven title, which will bring people together.

It would have been appreciated if Concord was featured during the PlayStation State of Play event that took place earlier this year, but hopefully, Firewalk Studios might be more prepared ahead of the upcoming Showcase.
