The “Sad” State of Call of Duty Is Making Fans Look Back at the Good Old Black Ops 2 Peaks
It has been a while since Call of Duty did anything worthwhile, but Activision’s franchise is still the first name that comes to mind whenever someone mentions first-person shooters. The games have enjoyed incredible peaks, ranging from the Black Ops sequel to the original Modern Warfare trilogy, which helped solidify the series’ name in a saturated genre.
However, a lot of the heart and soul that was put into Call of Duty years ago seems to be nonexistent now, and with entries like the Modern Warfare 3 reboot, it’s getting worse.
The Peak Era of Call of Duty Has Been Left Behind
More than a decade ago, Call of Duty was dominating in the first-person shooter genre, with titles like Black Ops 2 showcasing what the series was capable of if it tried to put in effort. The dedicated community was provided with amazing content in various forms, ranging from the fast-paced Hijacked and Nuketown maps in the Multiplayer mode to the spectacular Zombies section that always kept things fresh and entertaining.
Which is why it hurts more when Call of Duty fans look at its current state because they know how much potential it possesses.
Even with the introduction of an anti-cheat system, Team Ricochet, to combat hackers, the Multiplayer mode in the latest Call of Duty installment isn’t a satisfying experience.
A sentiment shared by the fanbase is that the franchise “isn’t fun anymore,” attributing the potential reason to the series dipping in quality after Black Ops 2 and even Ghosts, or maybe it’s because the players are grown up now. Regardless, the older Call of Duty entries felt special, as gamers have recorded more than a month’s worth of playtime in titles like the Black Ops sequel, which is something that’s becoming harder to do with each new installment.
Being Competitive Is Fine, but Not at the Expense of Fun
The downfall may not entirely be Call of Duty‘s fault, as the trends in its player base have also changed, with gamers becoming too competitive and forgetting the golden rule of having fun while playing a game.

Emerging as the winner at the end of a Multiplayer match is impressive, but there used to be a time when the community used to be happier while playing casual games with one another.
There are hopes that maybe the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops Gulf War takes the series back to its roots, but until then, fans will have to deal with Activision constantly throwing in pointless content that not many seem to resonate with.
