SUMMARY
  • Fortnite is immensely popular for crossover content, but Crytek is not following Epic Games.
  • Hunt: Showdown received criticism for bringing Ghostface without any context, which made the team learn a lesson.
  • The next time it collaborates, it will have specific criteria to match.

It looks like not everyone wants to be Fortnite. The gaming world has witnessed massive collaborations this year. Despite the industry’s difficulties, developers have been trying their best to entertain gamers with new content. Collaborating with renowned franchises often provides the chance to bring iconic characters to the games. Not all of them receive positive responses, however.

Hunt: Showdown’s 2024 journey was no less than a rollercoaster ride. Initially, the game was released in 2019, but at the beginning of this year, it received an enormous 1896 update with tons of content. Additionally, this update brought the first collaboration that didn’t get much appreciation.

Hunt: Showdown’s First-Ever Crossover Was Mostly Rejected by Fans

Hunt: Showdown‘s introduction of Ghostface didn’t get a good reception.

Hunt: Showdown is one of those games that doesn’t go for frequent crossovers. Nowadays, games collaborating with other games or movies to bring new content is common, but unfortunately, this trick didn’t work well for Crytek. Five years after its initial release, the game brought crossover content by collaborating with one of the scariest slasher film series, Scream.

While the crossover sounds interesting, Ghostface’s appearance didn’t go well. The audience unanimously agrees that Ghostface is an iconic antagonist that anyone would love to see in games, but the problem started when players found a killer from the 1990s roaming in a game set in the 1890s.

This wasn’t taken well by gamers. Despite the idea being cool, the execution lacked proper planning. In a recent interview, Crytek also accepted that,

In retrospect, we should have done more to elaborate on the narrative we have built around the Ghost Face Hunter before we went for the full reveal.”

The developer said that the 1896 crossover and the introduction of Ghostface took loads of research to build the storyline, but in the end, everything was messed up because the team didn’t “provide that to the community from the outset.” That was a lesson that the team learned.

Crytek Is Not Ready to Turn Hunt: Showdown Into Fortnite Anytime Soon

Hunt: Showdown isn’t going to turn into Fortnite anytime soon.

When it comes to in-game crossovers, no-one can beat Fortnite. Every new season of the game brings multiple crossovers with different movies, anime, games, etc. From Marvel to DC, Epic Games has brought content from many renowned franchises.

Since Hunt: Showdown started bringing crossover items, players have been expecting more from the game, especially because the first one didn’t really satisfy their hunger. Well, the scenario is different, as Crytek straightforwardly said no to this possibility.

When it was asked about the appearance of Peter Griffin or other animated characters in the game, the studio didn’t completely rule out the possibility and mentioned that it has further plans to bring content from different IPs in the future, but “you won’t see Peter Griffin or anime characters coming to Hunt any time soon.”

Instead, after the Ghostface incident, Crytek has been looking for “brands that can blend into the 19th Century world of Hunt.

According to the team, these collaborations will help it build interesting storylines and attract more audiences.
