SUMMARY
  • Tokyo Game Show 2024 occupied the entire weekend with numerous attractive game trailers.
  • Though games should be the highlight, Phil Spencer drew all the attention with his joke made on the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller.
  • However, PlayStation is coming with a new series of controllers to challenge Xbox once again this November.

The rivalry between Xbox and PlayStation once again surfaced at the Tokyo Game Show. This weekend was exciting, with this event showing off multiple upcoming games, but the sense of humor of the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencer, surpassed everything else. His joke while having a PS5 controller in hand has drawn the spotlight.

These two rival companies have been fighting to capture the console market for a long time. However, the latest data shows Xbox controllers are gaining more popularity among gamers worldwide, even for playing PC games. Phil Spencer, at this event, once again reaffirmed this dominance humorously.

Phil Spencer Says the PS5 Controller Doesn’t Have the X in the Right Place

Phil Spencer commented on the position of the X button on the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller.

Like every year, the Tokyo Game Show was full of hype. While the primary excitement was surrounding the games, the Microsoft Gaming CEO didn’t miss this chance to interact with Xbox gamers through it. So, he was spotted at the event interacting with gamers and trying a few games himself.

However, at one point, he got a PS5 controller to try out Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PS5 Pro. While playing it, he was captured pointing to the position of the X button on the controller and saying that this button is not in the right place.

Of course, the comparison has been made with Xbox controllers, and that’s clearly revealed from his following statement, mentioning, “The X button is supposed to be over there. Yeah, A, B, X, Y.” Well, that’s a light statement made for a joke, but at the same time, it reminds gamers of Xbox’s dominance over PlayStation when it comes to controllers

Interestingly, that’s not where things ended. Later, Xbox posted an image of a controller on its X (formerly Twitter) account, and marking the X button’s position, said the button should be placed there.

Well, that was probably his marketing strategy for Xbox controllers. Anyway, Spencer didn’t make that comment to start any console war, as he has always praised the DualSense controller for being innovative and inspiring.

Additionally, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch all have X buttons on the controllers, and they are all placed at different locations.

PlayStation is bringing a new PS5 edition of console and controller this November to start a colorful journey.

While the PS5 Pro’s announcement has taken the PlayStation community by storm, and Sony is already facing tough times preventing scalpers from booking the upcoming console, the latest State of Play revealed a new controller series in the queue.

Sony announced Chroma controllers at the September State of Play. This is going to be an aesthetic set of DualSense controllers and PlayStation 5 consoles, launching with three shining colors: Indigo, Teal, and Pearl. The most interesting part is that these consoles don’t only shine, but they shift color from every angle.

On PlayStation Blog, Sony’s Color, Material and Finish design team member, Leo Cardoso, expressed that they had been looking for the perfect time to step into this new colorful journey. Praising the designs of these controllers, he further revealed,

you’ll notice we’ve carefully refined the colors of every DualSense element to perfectly complement the playful, iridescent transitions.

These console and controller editions will be launched in two halves. First, on November 7, the Chroma Pearl and Chroma Indigo versions will be launched, and following them, the Teal version will be launched on January 23, 2025.

Anyway, the pre-booking will start together on October 3, 2024. So, players can pre-book any of the three colors, irrespective of the release date.
