SUMMARY
  • The Chaos Marines in Space Marine 2 are only playable in Eternal War, the game's PvP mode.
  • While six Chapters of the Marines make an apperance, each one is tied to a specific class with limited armor options.
  • Lore restrictions from Games Workshop and technical limitations could be holding Saber Interactive back as far as making more options available for the Chaos Marines is concerned.

With Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 enjoying a successful launch after fan reactions to the game have been overwhelmingly positive, Saber Interactive has been hard at work addressing issues in the game and player feedback about further improvements to the experience.

However, as far as a specific suggestion is concerned, it seems that Saber’s hands are tied on account of staying true to the well-established lore of the long-standing franchise, which may be a disappointment to players who are fans of the Chaos Space Marines who make an appearance in the main campaign.

Players Embracing Chaos Could Create Anarchy

Space Marine 2 has a lot to love for fans of Warhammer 40K despite a few minor gripes.

In a community post, members of Saber Interactive’s development team discussed the options at their disposal for the Chaos Marines, who are currently only playable in the Eternal War PvP mode of Space Marine 2. With six Chapters of the Chaos faction making an appearance and each one tied to a specific class, there are not a lot of options to customize heretic Chaos Marines at the moment when compared to loyalist Space Marines.

While the team also discussed several other future changes and additions to the game, the question of customization being added for Chaos Marines was one that was deftly sidestepped, with “lore restrictions” being cited as a reason for the limitations regarding options for players to use in PvP.

Space Marine 2 Has Quite the Roadmap Planned for Its Players

With an excellent main campaign and a lot of additions, Saber Interactive is working hard to make the game the best it can be.

The lore restrictions that are limiting Saber from adding customization options for the Chaos Marines, which currently restrict each Chapter to a specific class in addition to limitations on what can be chosen for their loadout, could come from Games Workshop, the creators of the Warhammer 40K universe.

Considering that the franchise began as a tabletop game with a well-established universe and is currently on the tenth edition of its rulebook, it could be challenging for Saber to bring in more options for the Chaos Marines while staying true to the overall lore tied to the faction that Games Workshop has established.

However, the developers at Saber also highlighted technical constraints that could potentially mar the game’s PvP experience if they were to allow customizations for the Chaos Marines – a situation that Saber would be eager to avoid in the light of several issues currently plaguing the game.

It is very tricky to match armor pieces for Chaos…in PvP it is important to be able to recognize an enemy’s class, and we want to keep the visual identity of each of them. Now, we will not keep it as it is and would like to expand Chaos customization, but the reality is they won’t be as modular as the Loyalist.”

Indeed, Space Marine 2 fans may prefer to keep the game running as smoothly as it can in lieu of creating issues for its Eternal War mode for the sake of minor customization options for players who are assigned as Heretics during matches.

Saber’s commendable approach to making meaningful changes to the game is sure to earn the goodwill of most players and fans of the elaborate universe that Warhammer 40K has established over the years.
