“Xbox needs to work really hard against PlayStation”: Bizarre Claims From the World’s Richest Tech Company Paint Nothing but Excuses in the ‘Console Wars’
The company's allocation of finances doesn't seem to be doing justice to its marketing department.
It has not been an easy decade for Microsoft’s gaming division, as Xbox has been on somewhat of a rollercoaster ride ever since the iconic 360 era ended. Not only have the following generations of Microsoft’s video game console proven to be underwhelming when compared to some of the major competition that they have faced, but it also sometimes makes some baffling decisions that make even the most loyal fans question their belief in the platform.
Although it really is not that big of a surprise that Sony’s PlayStation has been ahead of the curve at almost every turn, recent claims by the console’s marketing head show how the company seems to be coming up with new excuses to justify its performance for more than the last few years.
Xbox Apparently Does Not Have Enough Funding as Compared to Its Competitor Platform
It seems like Microsoft is always in the news for one reason or another, but recently, most of the updates that have been coming out of its gaming division have been met with less than ideal reception by the fanbase.
While Sony keeps winning the long-running console wars almost every passing year, it turns out that there are more than a few reasons why Xbox has not been reaching player expectations. In a recent interview, the platform’s EMEA marketing director Michael Flatt revealed that Microsoft does not provide enough funding to its gaming side of things, stating that Xbox needs “to work really hard against” its competition, which includes the highly successful PlayStation consoles.
“Regrettably they outspend us,” continued the console’s marketing head, claiming that Sony has always given a lot of financial attention to its gaming division, which is something that Microsoft seems to be lacking in. These claims may seem even more bizarre when one considers the huge collaborations that Xbox has been doing with all types of media, including the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film Deadpool & Wolverine.
However, due to a lack of sufficient funds for the platform’s marketing, Flatt admits that this forces his team to take “a more fiscally responsible approach to media investments.”
The Fanbase Does Not Seem to Be Convinced by the Marketing Director’s Claims
Microsoft was reportedly one of the most successful technology companies last year, with revenue surpassing Sony’s by quite a significant margin, so when the claims of Xbox’s marketing department not receiving enough funds surfaced, it definitely raised a few eyebrows within the community.
Some members of the Xbox fanbase pointed out that perhaps Microsoft is not allocating the required funds correctly, spending it on useless spectacles rather than on the console itself.
Naturally, the recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft for $69 billion was also brought up, as fans mentioned that perhaps the company does not want to spend more money on its gaming division.
With the kind of net worth that Microsoft has been able to achieve since its inception, players are skeptical about the marketing director’s revelation.
It is becoming increasingly hard for Xbox to find its footing amid the ever-growing and drastically changing competition, and if important personnel at Microsoft’s gaming division are admitting such claims, the platform might never reach the glory days of its past.
