Elden Ring Fan Must Hate Making Things Easier as He Completes the DLC Without a Single Bit of Help
Shadow of the Erdtree can apparently be completed even without map fragments.
Elden Ring is regarded as one of the greatest games in recent times, as along with difficult boss fights, in-depth lore, and a massive open world, the level of freedom that FromSoftware provided its players with is unmatched even when one considers the developer’s own portfolio. Hidetaka Miyazaki wasn’t going to let his magnum opus’ expansion ruin its legacy, and thankfully, Shadow of the Erdtree has managed to live up to the hype that surrounded it ever since it was announced last year.
However, as players are free to approach the game and its DLC however they wish to, there are some fans who limit themselves from taking any kind of help for the ultimate Soulsborne experience.
Who Needs a Map While Playing a Game as Massive as Elden Ring?
When the concept of summons and other helping components were included in Elden Ring to make it a bit more accessible, arguments erupted within the FromSoftware community, with many diehard enthusiasts asserting that taking help isn’t the right way to play Miyazaki’s games.

A sentiment felt by plenty, one Shadow of the Erdtree player took it several steps further, as he made the concept of map fragments null and void.
For those unaware, the DLC is the biggest that FromSoftware has ever created, and navigating through its numerous regions can be a hassle without an in-game map to guide players, which is where the fragments come into play.
As players explore the world that Miyazaki and his team created, they come across fragments that are reflected in the provided map, unlocking the places that they have been to and pinpointing where certain important elements are. But in this player’s case, it does not seem like there was any exploration carried out, as it looks like he just quickly went through the main story and did not really care about any of the lore that has been carefully incorporated in almost every aspect of Shadow of the Erdtree.
The map shown in the screenshot above does not give any substantial information, proving that the player ran through the DLC without any sort of aid.
Shadow of the Erdtree Director Himself Used the In-Game Aid
One of the major reasons why Elden Ring became so popular is how it presents its expansive narrative; similar to other FromSoftware video games, it ditches linear storytelling and opts for an explorative approach instead.
The aforementioned player’s rushed journey with Shadow of the Erdtree has resparked an extensive debate, as the community seems to be done with the superiority complex that gamers have when they complete a FromSoftware title without using any of the aiding components that the game offers them, such as the map fragments.
Not taking the time to fully appreciate the world that the developers spent a long time creating seems like the furthest thing from what Hidetaka Miyazaki would want, as the director himself has admitted to using all of the helpful resources that are present in Elden Ring to beat it.
And considering that Shadow of the Erdtree has raised the bar for video game expansions, maybe a quick first playthrough doesn’t do it much justice.
