Black Ops 6 Looms and Call of Duty Players Look Back at Some Unfairly Treated Titles in the Franchise
Some Call of Duty titles were better liked than others when they released. But perhaps they were treated a little harshly for their attempts to innovate.
Fans of first-person shooter games are eagerly waiting for the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 in October this year. As with any sequel, the new game’s fast-approaching release date has got some fans taking a nostalgic look back at other installments in the iconic franchise.
While Activision has always published every title in the franchise, their development has often changed hands, with each new studio taking a different approach to the respective title’s setting, gameplay mechanics, and campaigns with mixed levels of success on critical and commercial fronts.
Black Ops 6 Plays It Safe With a Grounded Narrative
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 continues the main story from its predecessor, promising players an exciting sequel full of twists and turns that stem from its main characters’ murky motivations. Set in the early years of the Gulf War in a world still reeling from the effects of the Cold War, the CIA comes under the threat of a new and unknown entity.

With its agents not knowing who to trust, the game features a branching, choice-based narrative for players to explore alongside a host of new innovations like the ability to plan your strategy from an evidence board before taking on a mission. The cooperative multiplayer Zombies mode makes a return with new maps being added for players to dive into.
Looking Back to Riskier Titles in the Franchise
An explosive trailer for the upcoming Black Ops sequel notwithstanding, some fans of the iconic franchise have taken to reexamining their opinions on other titles from the franchise released in the past.
In a post on the Call of Duty subreddit, a user named AnimeGokuSolos wonders if some of the franchise’s innovations were treated unfairly by its fans. Including images of the games in question.
Known for their attempts with futuristic, sci-fi settings that seemed more at home in franchises like Destiny, these games were widely panned upon their release, with players clamoring for a return to what the series did best. However, it seems that time has healed those wounds to some extent, with some fans bringing up fond memories of past titles.
Others were quick to agree, pointing out that those specific settings may have worked if they had not been released as Call of Duty titles.
However, others were quick to point out that maybe futuristic settings were not where things went wrong for those titles.
Love it or hate it, it’s evident that Call of Duty is here to stay. And if Black Ops 6 is as good as it seems to be, it looks like that’s not about to change anytime soon. Fans of the franchise do not have to wait too long to find out!
