SUMMARY
  • Gears of War: E-Day takes the franchise back to its roots with The Coalition choosing to explore the early days of Sera's many characters.
  • There are several key characters for The Coalition to bring in to its upcoming title's narrative.
  • It is an opportunity for players to see perspectives from both sides of the game's conflict between humanity and the Locust Horde while setting up the narrative for Gears 6.

The Gears of War franchise has enjoyed a massive fan following over the years on account of its compelling and expansive narrative. Its players have been introduced to many memorable characters while experiencing the struggles of Sera, the game’s home world, against the Locust Horde and the many evolutions it has undergone over the course of the franchise’s story.

While fans eagerly wait to see where Gears 6 takes Kait Diaz and her team following the cliffhanger left by its predecessor, The Coalition has decided to take things back to where they started with Gears of War: E-Day, which explores the origins of the series’ conflict.

While it will be nice to get a look at the early lives of Marcus Fenix and his crew mates, other characters from the franchise’s early days could be equally interesting in the upcoming title’s return to the series’ roots. Here are nine characters we would love to see return to the series’ lore.

9. Augustus Cole

Gears of War: E-Day takes the franchise back to a time before the Locust Horde.

Cole was a major presence in the first Gears of War title, endearing himself to many players on account of his optimistic and affable personality.

Exploring Cole’s origins during Marcus’ incarceration could be a great opportunity for The Coalition to bring his motivations into the spotlight and give players a look into his reasons for signing up with the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG).

8. Lieutenant Minh Young Kim

With many interesting characters making their mark on the franchise, The Coalition is certainly spoilt for choice when it comes to inclusions in its upcoming title.

A patriot who shared a somewhat antagonistic relationship with Marcus who he saw as a deserter to the COG, Kim was a major presence in the early parts of the franchise’s narrative.

His role in the Lightmass offensive as well as in the evacuation of Ilima makes him a great character for E-Day to showcase. We could get a look at his perspective on the Locust conflict while getting a peek at his time in the COG during his early years.

7. Chairman Richard Prescott

Exploring the backstories of important faces can help elevate the franchise’s lore to greater heights.

A key leader of the COG during the Locust Wars, Prescott’s often ambiguous loyalties could make a look at his rise to power among the COG’s ranks a great addition to E-Day, with the game exploring his time in service with the Gears despite him not seeing combat.

His backstory could focus on his reasons for acting the way he did in the series’ narrative, with his early years at Sera serving as a backdrop for his actions in the future.

6. Colonel Victor Hoffman

gearsofwar eday3
Taking a look at how some of the games’ many characters rose to prominence could be very rewarding for long-term fans.

Hoffman’s presence at multiple points in Gears of War’s narrative makes him a perfect addition to E-Day, as the game explores a time before the Locust Wars.

The game could explore his early military career and showcase how he built his relationships with many of the franchise’s characters in the run-up to the emergence of the Locust Horde.

5. Damon Baird

gearsofwar eday1
Baird’s role as an arrogant but brilliant foil to Marcus could be elaborated on in the new game.

As a teammate to Marcus Fenix whose sarcasm and cynical attitude often put the two men at odds with each other despite their respective talents, Baird’s early years would be an excellent narrative thread for Gears of War: E-Day to explore.

It would be great to take a look at events that led him to creating the DeeBees and possibly give more context to his arrogant and often confrontational nature.

4. Anya Stroud

gearsofwar eday5
Marcus’ early interactions with Anya would be a great thing to see in E-Day.

First Minister Anya Stroud’s role in the Locust Wars and sentencing Marcus in the early years of Gears of War’s narrative can be great for E-Day, with the game exploring her time with the COG and her rise to prominence despite growing up under the shadow of her mother Helena Stroud.

The game could also explore the early days of her relationship with Marcus whom she eventually marries, making her a great choice for The Coalition’s blast from the past.

3. General RAAM

gearsofwar eday7
The Locust Horde’s most ferocious fighter would be a great addition to the game.

With the new game looking back at the emergence of the Locusts, it would be the best opportunity to look at the conflict from their perspective and RAAM would be the perfect character for such an attempt.

Intelligent, tenacious, and highly committed to Queen Myrrah’s cause, the Locust General’s early years could be a highlight of E-Day’s story considering his role in several of the franchise’s major events.

2. Queen Myrrah

gearsofwar eday2
Myrrah’s murky origins would be a sight to behold if The Coalition handles things right.

Queen Myrrah’s significance to Kait Diaz and her role as leader of the Locusts would make her appearance in Gears of War: E-Day work wonders for the game’s story while allowing The Coalition to set up the narrative for a sequel to Gears 5 with style. The game could explore her days at the New Hope Research Facility, possibly exploring her reasons for hating humanity while also adding on to her already excellent character arc.

Exploring her rise to power among the Locust Horde would certainly elevate the game’s focus on events before the Horde’s emergence.

1. Dr. Adam Fenix

gearsofwar eday8
Marcus’ father may very well have a role to play in events leading up to the Emergence.

As Marcus’ father and a key figure in events surrounding the Locust Horde’s emergence, Dr. Adam Fenix’s appearance in Gears of War: E-Day would be a brilliant way to address a few unresolved threads from the franchise’s narrative surrounding the Lambent and other mutations of the Locusts. It would be great to see his early work on Rustlung infections and his development of a countermeasure against the Lambent, which he created alongside Queen Myrrah.

Gears of War: E-Day certainly has several options when it comes to characters with significance to the Locust War. While these characters would be great additions, players will have to wait to find out what The Coalition has planned for its exploration of the franchise’s origins – although it is all set to be an engaging, action-packed narrative if the franchise’s past is any indication.
