Nexon Korea’s The First Descendant is the latest title to grace the hallowed halls of the MMORPG genre. It places its players in the shows of the Descendants, humanity’s last line of defense against a hostile alien race called the Vulgus, who are hell-bent on invading and taking control.

The First Descendant’s RPG mechanics give its players a lot of freedom in terms of how they want to take on its hordes of enemies, with several playstyles and builds made possible through adding Mods, Reactors, and Weapon Mods to their character that work alongside their collection of unlockable abilities.

However, as with the RPGs that have inspired it, The First Descendant can get quite overwhelming for new players and veterans of the genre alike who have just dived into the action. That’s why we put together a list of five great builds to use when you take on the Vulgus, keeping in mind a range of playstyles to make your time with the game a lot easier.

5. Ajax the Crowd-Controller

The First Decendant can get oerwhelming with its varied RPG mechanics.

For players who would like to trade mobility for some excellent defense and crowd-control abilities, Ajax can be a great choice with which to start The First Descendant. Easily accessible as a starting character or through research crafting, Ajax can become the ultimate tank that the Vulgus could find very hard to take down.

His Void Energy passive can be deadly when used at the right moment as is easily charged through the use of other skills like Orbit Barrier, Void Walk, Hypercube, and Expulsion, that balance utility against low cooldowns. Mods that lower cooldowns and expand the radius of his attacks can make Ajax a force to be reckoned with in the field, making him a durable and powerful option for your early hours in the game.

4. Blair the Pyromaniac

thefirstdescendant builds h3
Roast your enemies with Blair’s fire attacks for some incredible damage.

If damage over time (DoT) is more your style, look no further than Blair. This versatile character makes up for low durability with his ability to stack critical damage from setting enemies on fire for some seriously high damage numbers. Blair works best when you are able to apply the burn status on multiple enemies at a time, allowing his bonuses to stack and increasing the critical damage you apply on each of them.

Using weapons like Sigvore’s Proof of the Tamer in tandem with skills like Blaze Up, Burn Taste, and his Pitmaster passive could see you cover the battlefield in a sea of flames with a ton of critical damage every time an enemy burns. Look out for the Fire Enhancement and Concentration Priority Mods to make the most out of Blair’s pyrotechnic abilities.

3. Bunny the Energizer

If you prefer a highly mobile, hard-to-hit character, you may want to go with Bunny. Her speed and mobility are only surpassed by her ability to rack up a lot of damage on a single target or on groups with her electric attacks. She charges them up as she moves around the field and weapons like the Thunder Cage submachine gun can work wonders if you pair them up with Mods like Rifling Reinforcement and Action and Reaction.

Her Rabbit Foot passive works wonders when paired with skills like Light Speeding, Maximum Power, and Lightning Emission, which make Bunny the definition of shock and awe. Her mobility also makes her quite hard to hit for skilled players, making her a great choice for dashing around the battlefield and getting in position to exploit an enemy’s weaknesses.

2. Freyna the Toxic Tormentor

thefirstdescendant builds h2
The more enemies Freyna finds in the field, the better.

While fire and electricity are quite effective against the Vulgus, poison damage can take things up a notch in The First Descendant, and Freyna is quite the specialist with toxins. Her Contagion Links passive boosts her damage on poisoned enemies, which works very well with skills like Decomposed Poison or Toxic Trauma, allowing you to weaken your enemies and consistently whittle away at their health.

The Fallen Hope Assault Rifle is your best bet with this versatile character and its damage can be supplemented with the Toxic Conductor Weapon Mod. Combine the Toxic Mechanic Reactor with Mods like Neurotoxic Synthesis and Focus on Toxic to make the most out of her poisonous playstyle and watch her melt enemy health bars without batting an eyelid.

Although she may be a challenge to unlock, Freyna is definitely worth the effort once you have found your feet in the game and can carry you well into the final battles and beyond with her versatile attacks.

1. Sharen the Shadowy Assassin

thefirstdescendant builds h4
Sharen can quickly make any battlefield as empty as this one if used correctly.

If striking from the shadows sounds appealing to you, Sharen is a masterclass in assassinations with her Active Camouflage and Ambush Mode abilities. When used correctly, you essentially charge up Ambush Mode for increased damage on enemies while simultaneously charging up Active Camouflage to vanish from their sight once again.

Using weapons like Piercing Light in tandem with skills like Impact Rounds, Cutoff Beam, and Flash Shortsword makes Sharen a whirlwind of attacks and stuns that most Vulgus troops and even a few bosses would find hard to counter against. This build works wonders against nearly any enemy in the game on account of her ability to vanish after dealing tons of damage with a few attacks.

The above builds should help you get started with The First Descendant and perhaps carry you into the endgame if you are able to make the most of their unique mechanics of which there are several after the game’s first patch.
